What Is Crossover, and Can Passing Its Tests Really Get You an Interview?
Oct 01, 2026Did you know there’s a site where, if you pass their assessments, the next step is an interview with the hiring manager?
And by its own numbers, more than half of its new hires double or triple their previous pay.
It’s called Crossover. It’s one of the few places where your resume isn’t the filter.
Key Insight:
↳ Crossover shortlists on tested ability, not on how your resume reads.
↳ Pass a 15-minute aptitude test and a job-specific work sample, and you’re talking to the hiring manager. In Crossover’s words, by then “the pressure is off.”
↳ Pay is set by the role, in USD, not by where you live.
Why It Matters:
↳ Many applications today are read by software before a person. If your experience doesn’t match the keywords, it may not reach a human.
↳ A skills-first process takes that layer out. No degree filter. No gap to explain. No penalty for a career that doesn’t read cleanly on paper.
↳ If you’re better at the job than at the application game, this is one place where that works in your favor.
The Details:
↳ Step 1, a fit check. A 15 to 20 minute chat with an AI interviewer confirms the role matches your background. Crossover says final hiring decisions are made by people.
↳ Step 2, the CCAT. A cognitive aptitude test: 50 questions in 15 minutes. You don’t lose points for wrong answers, so skip anything that’s slowing you down. Few people finish all 50, and that’s expected.
↳ Step 3, a work sample. A job-specific assignment, graded blind. Engineers write code. Marketers build campaign content.
↳ Step 4, the interview. You’ve already proven the skills, so this is a two-way conversation about fit with the hiring manager.
↳ Then the offer. A short verification step confirms your earlier results. Crossover says top candidates can go from application to offer in a few days.
↳ The pay. Openings on Crossover’s homepage as of October 2026 list $50 to $200 USD per hour, full-time at 40 hours per week. That’s $100,000 to $400,000 per year.
↳ Your score travels. A CCAT result is good for 6 months across Crossover roles. Miss a role’s target and you can retake it after 6 months.
↳ Practice is free. Crossover publishes its own CCAT guide, and warns that anyone selling “guaranteed” passing scores is running a scam.
↳ One question to ask before you accept: is the role set up as an employee or a contractor? That changes your taxes and your benefits, including health coverage.
Why This Isn’t Everywhere:
↳ Most hiring runs on applicant tracking systems built to sort resumes. A process designed to ignore the resume doesn’t fit how those systems rank and surface jobs.
↳ Blind-graded work samples also take real infrastructure to run at scale, and many employers haven’t built it.
↳ So skills-first roles like these sit outside the channels most job searches run through. That’s structural, not anyone’s fault. Visibility follows structure.
↳ It’s also built to be hard. Crossover says its assessments shortlist the top 1% of applicants. That’s the trade: a tougher filter, in exchange for one that doesn’t care where you went to school or where you live.
Why It’s a Win-Win I Wanted to Surface:
↳ You get judged on what you can do, at pay set by the role instead of your zip code.
↳ The employer interviews people already proven on real work, drawn from 130+ countries.
↳ Your household gets a full-time remote role paid in USD, and in Crossover’s numbers, over half of new hires double or triple what they made before.
↳ Crossover gets to deliver what it promises employers: the top of the talent pool, proven before the first conversation.
Where to Go From Here
Crossover lays out each step on its selection process page, and the free CCAT guide is the best place to start practicing.
We Actually Have a Book on This
Chapter 8 of From Invisible to Undeniable walks through skills-first hiring and how to approach the CCAT, alongside the other channels that skip the resume pile.
A note on the numbers: the pay ranges and the “over 50%” figure are Crossover’s own, not independently audited. I don’t earn anything if you apply or get hired.
